I also like the promise in verse 18: I will not leave you orphans; I will come back to you!
I like verse 16 because Jesus is promising to ask the Father, and He will give you another advocate to be with you for ever, that spirit of truth whom the world can never receive since it neither sees nor knows him; but you know him, because he is with you, he is in you. Anyone who receives my commandments and keeps them will be one who loves me; and anybody who loves me will be loved by my father, and I shall love him and show myself to him.
God speaks of sending another advocate if we ask. Advocate in the Greek is parakletos: advocate or counsellor or protector. So, I'm claiming this promise for sure that God is sending someone to counsel me and to protect me and he will never leave me! WAHOOIE!!!
Karen, I love the point you make about receiving the promises from God. It's true. I think so many Christians live like homeless paupers when the truth is, we are childdren of the King! We are coheirs with Christ. We have riches beyond measure because we are princes and princesses of God. But if we don't claim these promises and receive them we are missing out. This is also why memorizing scripture is so important: so that when we are going through a trial, we have an anchor (promise from God) to hold on to.
Mom, I love your insights here. I love how you put it all into context using surrounding verses. We are not alone, we are not orphans because God Himself, living in and through me by His Spirit is always with me. I say with you, Mom, WAHOOIE!
